EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
