RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
